Chat box for Blogger or website

The recently released Yahoo messenger 9 includes a very attractive feature called Pingbox. Pingbox is an instant messenger/chat widget that can be easily embedded in Blogger or any website . I accept that there are scripts for running instant chat rooms in websites, but the Yahoo Pingbox has numerous other features than these chat boxes . Yahoo ping box gives extreme importance for user privacy . Chats in Yahoo Pingbox are held privately  between the visitor and webmaster .

In my previous post about Yahoo online presence in your blog or website , I explained a similar solution . But chatting was pretty difficult there as it takes you to Yahoo web messenger . There ,the user needs a Yahoo account and he needs to sign in to get in touch with you . Other than being a simple chat box ,the Yahoo ping box shows a message when a user gets online in your websites and when he goes offline.

. Yahoo Pingbox also supports the use of Yahoo! smileys inside chat window.

For implementing  chat box in your website ,you need to get a copy Yahoo messenger 9 or else directly go to messenger.yahoo.com ,sign in and select Pingbox from tabs .

If you are online in Yahoo messenger , then go to Pingbox page by clicking mypingbox on messenger tab( Make sure that you have connected to internet) .

Here is a Screenshot of Pingbox setup page were you can change the appearance of your chat box widget , to match with the size , color scheme of your website /blog .

After creating a suitable model , click on next . Now you will be re-directed to another page where you can  customize widget length,width etc.
Now copy the resulting chat box  JavaScript code to your website or Blogger page to get it installed.
In Blogger>Go to your template’s edit Layout section and choose a suitable location . Now click on add a new gadget and select HTML/JavaScript .

One disadvantage with this chat box widget is that it affects the loading time of websites . And also it needs Adobe flash player .

Yahoo messenger 9 final full offline installer

After several months of beta testing, Yahoo messenger 9 is now available for download. The default installer from Yahoo’s official website is an online installer and you need an internet connection to download the remaining files .  If you are shifting or formatting your PC, then you would  need to download Yahoo messenger again.To avoid this , here I am providing you a link to download Yahoo messenger 9 offline installer .

If you are online, YM9 can forward messages sent by your YM buddies to your phone via SMS( I think that costs few bucks).

If you are offline on Yahoo messenger and if someone left you a voice message, you can now choose to forward it to your email.

Click Contacts in the Messenger main menu and select Call History.
At the bottom of the window that opens, click to activate voice mail service by producing your email.

The major disadvantage of Yahoo messenger 9 is that its an ad supported instant messaging client . The other factor is its large size ( apprx. 15 mb)  and memory usage compared to close competitors. So instead of using Yahoo messenger , I usually use mobile Instant messengers like Talkonaut which supports Yahoo , MSN and Google talk together .

Add Yahoo messenger to website

Yahoo ! presence is a kind of online status button which indicates the Yahoo messenger status of a webmaster , on his blog/website or forum  .On clicking the online status button (usually a smiley) a new window will appear, leading the visitor to Yahoo web messenger .

Add Yahoo messenger to a website , you need Yahoo Geocities account .In Geocities control panel select create & update then addons from sub tab . After selecting Yahoo! presence choose a suitable button and copy the code anywhere . Other than presence, there are services like Yahoo search , webcam ,maps,guest book,email form etc. that you can choose if you want them .

To add  Yahoo messenger to Blogger , open dashboard and select the blog where you want to implement the code .
Go to Layout and selct a suitable location for the widget to appear . Click to add a page element ( Add a Gadget for blogger in draft) and select HTML and JavaScript .Paste the code and save your widget .

Use Yahoo smileys in blogger posts

You might have seen the use Yahoo smiley’s in WordPress blogs and comment systems . They are the instant way of expressing thoughts and sometimes even powerful than words……Unfortunately Blogger blogs doesn’t have a system to Use Yahoo smiley’s in Blogger posts .
Now for using Yahoo smiles in Blogger posts ,what you need to download is a Mozilla Firefox addon called Greesmonkey .Use of this addon  will allow the execution of user scripts on  FF browser.

How to hide remove Blogger Navbar

Navbar stands for navigation bar and you can always see it on the top portion of your Blogger blog. As the name indicates , it aids your movement from the front page to Login and to dashboard . Also users can flag and report any potential violation directly to Google through a button on Blogger navbar.

These days, many of the Bloggers hide the navbar as they feel that its less attractive .Most of the custom Blogger templates available on internet are also packed up after removing navbars . But removing navbar is a possible violation of Google Blogger TOS for “.blogspot ” accounts and for those who have own domain in blogger , I hope there’s no problem…

There are two methods . One deals with a way to hide Blogger navbar and other with the removal .

Remove Blogger Navbar :

Open dashboard ,select the blog on which hack is to be implemented .
Move on to the Blogger templates‘ layout and select edit HTML .

Now press Ctrl+F and search for <b:skin><![CDATA[/*

Place the following code just below this line and save the template .

#navbar, #navbar-iframe {height: 0px;visibility: hidden;display: none;}

Though the navbar is completely CSS , hiding them has a little SEO value as you can avoid the encounter of search engine crawler with “login to Blogger” and other links on navbar (Got this idea from another blog).

Update : Hiding navbar is not aganist Blogger TOS .
